I thought the "meeting" of the Pranksters and Leary was hilarious. Here is Leary living in a lavish country estate, experimenting with the spiritual and philosophical meanings of LSD, and up the drive comes unnanounced this multi-colored bus filled with wigged out proto-hippies hurling green smoke bombs from the windows and playing horrendous music on the roof. Not surprised Leary was nowhere to be found.

And these hip-hop folks think they started the East Coast vs. West Coast thing. Seems like the free-wheeling acid-heads from SF and the reserved, intellectual spritual explorers in Millbrook, NY started it much earlier.

I agree. That part was really eye-opening. They roll up expecting this grand welcome, and Leary and his disciples just scatter. I have to say I don't really blame them! People seemed amused to see the bus rolling through town, but most of the folks they actually spent any time with seemed to barely tolerate them -- perhaps wondering why a bunch of grown men were driving around acting like kids on a sugar high.

Yeah, don't think I'd be too hip on inviting Cowboy Neal in for tea.

Yeah, except Neal was the only one who got an audience with Leary, apparently.

Go figure. If I was a mellow intellectual buzzed on some pharmaceutical grade blotter, dealing with a crazed speed freak would be on the bottom of my "to do" list.

nostalgia goes just so far. Yes it's great to see and hear the true birth of the hippies and their acid fueled fun times, but remember besides the music was changing, womens rites were improving, anti distrimination laws were coming into effect and of course we were at war and guys were dying in front of us on t.v or you actually could have served as well. When I got to the bay area in 73' the fun seemed to be over but at least it wasn't burning like the Bronx was.
